Learning to teach my kids at home was a learning curve in someways because I kept trying to do it the way the schools do. Once I settle into our own home rhythms, our home purpose things started falling into place.
“The most important work you and I will ever do will be within the walls of our own homes.”
We are so lucky to live in a time where there is an abundance of curriculum out there! Each of us teaches a little differently, have different priorities and kids with different needs. That is why it's so important to know your why, understand your kids needs and explore options until you find what feels right for your family.
We have tried a few different schedule's during our years of home learning. This schedule is what is currently working for us!
Religion is a non negotiable in our home. Though we are not perfect, we have set the expectation that we get up, get ready, sit around the kitchen table as a family and we do some form of scripture study over breakfast.
Core: We do 2+ lessons of math Monday-Thursday. Then the next week we do 2+ lessons of LA, and we keep that rotation going weekly. This helps us not feel overwhelmed by multiple "workbooks" and it helps the flow be smoothly by only focusing on one core subject per week.
We LOVE History! It's a win-win for everyone so we do this daily Monday-Wednesday.
For the last half hour+ we do some form of an elective. Somedays its a group lesson (Science/Geography), some days its a lessons the kids do in person (Sewing, Music) or online (Typing). Having a mixture takes a load off of me to be responsible for teaching them all the things, and it mixes it up for the kids. Not all kids will be in every paid lessons together and in this case the ones not in the paid lessons usually have time to self learn on their own(Lego education, wood whittling kits, robotic/coding kits, art subscription boxes, etc)
Friday's are our short or no school days. I look at it as my day off from having to plan any lessons. We usually do a subscription box, play educational games, typing class and then they have free time to work on extra curricular subjects/skills.
The times are more of a boundry than a stickler. If our days starts early we just move into the next subject as we finish each one. Some days get dragged out, but we have learned that it's better to be done before noon in our house, so we try and not fall behind this time schedule often.
